Dollar Tree is known as one of the top discount variety retailers in the United States. It is also a Fortune 500 company, with over 15,115 stores and 24 distribution centers. They offer a variety of budget-friendly items to keen shoppers across a range of categories. The company offers employees a wealth of benefits on top of their salary, with the Dollar Tree 401(k) plan being a major incentive.

You can participate in the Dollar Tree 401(k) if you are age 21 or older, have worked at least 1,000 hours in the last year, and have been with the company (or Family Dollar, their subsidiary) for a year. You can choose to contribute any percentage you wish up to the annual 401(k) limit, and you may also receive a dollar-for-dollar match of up to 5% of eligible pay.

Dollar Tree 401(k) provider

The Dollar Tree 401(k) plan is with Empower Retirement as of 2021. Previously, it was offered through Wells Fargo, so older parked plans may still be with them.

You will be required to create your User ID and password as a first-time user, which you will use to access your 401(k) account in the future.

Dollar Tree 401(k) loan

As with most 401(k) plans, you can take a loan from your Dollar Tree 401(k) plan, either as a general-purpose loan or a residential 401(k) loan. 401(k) loans are capped at $50,000 or 50% of your vested account balance, whichever is lesser. You will have 3 years to pay back a general-purpose 401(k) loan, and up to 15 years for home purchase loans.

Dollar Tree 401(k) after termination

Once you leave employment with Dollar Tree, you will have to decide what to do with your Dollar Tree 401(k). If your balance is below $1,000, the plan will automatically pay out your balance in cash. However, if you have a substantial amount invested in your 401(k), you can leave the money invested in the Dollar Tree 401(k) plan, but you will not be able to make further contributions.

Alternatively, you can roll it over to your new employer or another qualified 401(k) or IRA. You can also choose to withdraw the money to pay for an immediate expense, but you will owe back income taxes and penalty fees to the IRS if you are below age 59 ½.

Dollar Tree 401(k) withdrawal

If you are over 59 ½, you can take penalty-free withdrawals from your Dollar Tree 401(k) account, either as a lump sum or in increments. However, if you are below age 59 ½, you won’t be able to make withdrawals from your 401(k) account unless you have a qualifying financial hardship.

Dollar Tree 401(k) early withdrawal

You can only make an early withdrawal from your Dollar Tree 401(k) if you have a qualifying financial hardship. This covers circumstances like burial expenses for you and your immediate dependents, uninsured medical or home repair costs, or foreclosure and eviction. You will need to have exhausted all other logical fund sources to do so, including rolled-over funds and old employer matches.
