HCA Healthcare, based in Nashville, Tennessee, is a major provider of for-profit healthcare in the United States. It currently operates over 186 hospitals as well as over 2,000 other healthcare-related facilities. HCA employees have access to a wealth of benefits in addition to their standard pay package. One of these benefits is the HCA 401(k) plan to help employees save for retirement.

New HCA employees can join the HCA 401(k) plan on the first day of their third month of service, as long as they are age 18 or older. The company matches employee contributions dollar-for-dollar, starting at 3%. This will rise in 5-year increments over your employment time, up to 9% for employees with 25 years of service.

HCA 401(k) provider

The HCA 401(k) plan is currently with the Retirement Clearinghouse. You can manage your benefits and other aspects of your 401(k) plan through www.HCArewards.com. If you are a new employee, you can use your HCA 3-4 ID and the last digits of your Social Security number to register and create your account.

HCA 401(k) login

You can manage your HCA 401(k) plan by logging into your account at www.HCArewards.com. If this is your first time, make sure you have your HCA ID and Social Security number on hand to register. If you have forgotten your login credentials, use the recovery options on the login page to create a new username or password.

HCA 401(k) match

Once you become eligible for a company match, you will start receiving a dollar-for-dollar match of 3% of your eligible pay. This will rise by 1% in staged 5-year increments based on your years of service, up to 9% of your total pay at 25 years or more. The HCA 401(k) matching only applies to regular contributions, not catch-up ones.

HCA 401(k) loan

The HCA 401(k) plan allows one 401(k) loan at a time. This loan may only be taken against existing after-tax contributions, prior employer contributions, and any rolled-over funds. Loans must be repaid within 5 years unless the money was used to buy your primary home, in which case you will have 10 years. The minimum you can take is $1,000, up to $50,000 or 50% of your qualifying balance, whichever is less.

HCA 401(k) after termination

If you do not direct them otherwise, your HCA 401(k) plan will be rolled over to a safe harbor IRA if your balance is below $5,000 but higher than $1,000, or cashed out if the balance is under $1,000 when you leave the company. For balances higher than $5,000, you can opt to leave it in the plan (but you will not be able to make further contributions), or roll the funds over to your new employer’s plan, or a similarly qualified savings plan. You can opt to have the plan pay out your balance in full but you will incur significant tax penalties if you are younger than 59 ½ years of age.

HCA 401(k) withdrawal

You can only withdraw money from your HCA 401(k) plan while still working if you are over 59 ½. You will be able to make penalty-free withdrawals of the vested balances; you will still owe income taxes on the withdrawals. Plan participants have access to their after-tax contributions, previous rollovers, and old company matches at all times. If you are younger than 59 ½, you can only access other portions of your HCA 401(k) plan if you qualify for a hardship distribution in a financial emergency.

HCA 401(k) early withdrawal

For those younger than 59 ½, you can only make an early withdrawal from the HCA 401(k) plan if you have a qualifying financial hardship. This includes financial emergencies like uninsured home repairs, funeral expenses for immediate family, medical emergencies, eviction, or foreclosure. You will need to exhaust all other fund sources, including rollover amounts and after-tax contributions, first.

Employees who join before their 18th birthday will be eligible on the day of their birthday. If you are rehired within 6 months of leaving HCA, you can immediately resume contributions. Note that certain HCA employees (like travel nurses) may not be eligible, typically in positions deemed part-time or contractual.

HCA 401(k) vesting

Your HCA 401(k) plan will be 20% vested for every year of service after 2 years of contribution. You will be 100% vested after 6 years of eligible contributions. This does not apply to after-tax contributions, old employee matches, or rollovers, which are always 100% vested.
