If you are a senior citizen age 62 years or older, you may want to explore the Senior Pass, commonly known as the America the Beautiful- the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. This card gives seniors access to the recreational parks and sites managed by the National Parks Service (NPS). But, how much does the Senior Pass cost?

U.S. Citizens and permanent residents age 62 or older can purchase a senior pass either as an annual or lifetime pass. A Lifetime Senior Pass for senior citizens costs $80, while the annual Senior Pass costs $20. You can also trade the annual pass for a lifetime pass if you have purchased four annual passes in four consecutive years.

What is the senior pass?

Most of the recreational sites managed by the National Park Service are free to visit, but some require visitors to pay an entrance fee. If you are a senior citizen, and you are a frequent visitor to the recreational sites and parks, you can save money on the one-time or annual entrance fees with a Senior Pass, officially known as America the Beautiful pass or interagency pass.

The Senior Pass encourages seniors to visit national parks, monuments, and federal recreation sites. The card can be used at sites managed by the National Park Service, Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Bureau of Land Management.

To purchase the Senior Pass, you must be a US Citizen or permanent resident at least age 62 or older. You will be required to provide proof of age and residency when applying for the card. Some documents you can provide include a birth certificate, driver’s license, or other government-issued documents.

How to obtain a Senior Pass

If you are eligible for the Senior Pass, you can get it in several ways. First, you can purchase the card in person at a participating federal recreation site or office. The participating agencies include the National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, and the Bureau of Land Management. You can call ahead before visiting to be sure that they have ready passes.

You can also purchase a Senior Pass by mail using the mail-in form on the USGS store website. You will be required to attach copies of documents showing your birthdate, citizenship, and permanent residence. Mailed applications require an additional $10 processing fee, in addition to the cost of the Senior Pass.

Alternatively, you can purchase the Senior Pass online at the participating agency’s website. You will be required to upload documentation issued by an authorized federal agency to prove your birthdate, citizenship, and permanent residence. You will pay an additional $10 processing fee as part of the application process.

If you are age 62 or older, you can take advantage of your senior status to get a big discount on a Senior Pass. Generally, there are two Senior Pass options for seniors who want to visit the over 2,000 recreational sites in the United States i.e. Annual and Lifetime Senior Pass.

The annual pass costs $20 for one year of visitation, while the lifetime pass costs $80 for seniors who visit the recreational sites multiple times a year. The annual pass is only valid for one year, and it gives you unlimited access to federal recreational sites for the owner and all passengers in a single vehicle. You also get a 50% discount on recreation site amenities such as camping and guided tours.

On the other hand, the Lifetime Senior Pass has no expiration, and eligible seniors get a 50% discount on recreation site amenities, based on location. Also, you get unlimited access to all federal recreation sites and national parks for the rest of your life. The pass is valid for the owner and all passengers in a single vehicle. The Senior Pass also provides a 50% discount on some expanded amenities that visitors may want to enjoy. Some of these amenities include camping, swimming, fishing, guided tours, boat launching, parking fees, etc. However, the discount does not apply at onsite gift shops.

Additionally, the recreation sites under NPS are a great way for seniors to stay active. Apart from enjoying some of the most beautiful sceneries, you can go hiking, cycling, trekking, biking, or even camping in the national parks and forests.

Replacing lost/damaged Senior Pass

If your Senior Pass is lost or stolen, you won't be able to get a replacement. You will need to get a new Senior Pass to get unlimited access to federal recreational sites or pay the required entrance fees every time you visit a recreational site.

However, if your Senior Pass gets damaged but a portion of the card is still visible, you can get a free replacement at the recreation site you are visiting. You can get the damaged card replaced in person at a recreation site or by mail. For mailed replacements, you will be required to mail the damaged card and pay a processing fee.
