Marriott International is a hospitality and hotel-focused multinational American company. It is the largest hotel group in the world, going by room numbers. They are responsible for 31 Brands and 8,000 properties, 2,149 of which are operated directly and the remainder through franchise agreements. Marriott offers some attractive perks for full-time direct employees, including a Marriott 401(k) account and a profit-sharing account.

Marriott offers a 401(k) plan to full-time employees, also known as associates, who have completed 90 days of continuous service with the company, at locations that offer the plan, and where you are paid through their official Marrpay payroll system or an eligible equivalent. You can contribute anything from 1% to 80% of your weekly pay, with a backdating system open to tipped employees who don’t cover the amount in a specific week. They offer a 100% match up to 5% of weekly pay to employees over the age of 21, who have worked 1,000 hours in a continuous 12-month period.

Marriott 401(k) match

The Marriott 401(k) plan allows you to save towards retirement either in a Roth 401(k) or a traditional 401(k) plan. The company offers a 100% match up to 5% of your weekly pay. The employer match only considers regular contributions, not catch-up contributions. To be eligible for the employer match, you must be at least 21 years old and worked for 1,000 hours for at least 12 continuous months with the company.

Marriott 401(k) loan

You can borrow from your vested Marriott 401(k) account balance, as well as your profit-sharing plan account (where applicable) for any reason while you are working for the company. The minimum loan amount you can borrow is $1,000, and the maximum is the lesser of $50,000 or half your vested account balance.

Funds used to secure a 401(k) loan cannot be withdrawn until the balance is paid. There is a processing fee of $75 for each loan request and you can only have one loan at a time. Loan periods run from 1 year to 4 years.

Alternatively, you can also take a 401(k) loan to purchase a primary residence, with a repayment period of up to 10 years. You can only borrow the amount required to satisfy your need, up to the plan loan limit.

Marriott 401(k) after termination

If you leave employment with Marriott International, you won’t be able to make further contributions to your 401(k) or receive a company match. The only exception is eligible non-severance payments made within 2 ½ months after you leave, which will be added to the plan automatically.

You can choose to leave the money in the plan, roll it over into your new employer's 401(k) plan or a private qualified retirement plan, or cash out. If you want to leave your 401(k) money behind, you must have at least $5,000 in your 401(k) account. If your balance is below $5,000, it may be automatically cashed out or rolled over over an IRA selected by the employer.

Marriott 401(k) withdrawal

If you are still working at Marriott International and are over 59 ½ years of age, you can withdraw your retirement savings or profit-sharing plan account balance without restriction. This includes before-tax and after-tax amounts, rollovers, and company matches.

If you are under 59 ½ years of age, you can withdraw your after-tax savings at any time as long as they are not from the current year, as well as your rollovers and matches from previous employers. However, if you have participated in the Marriott 401(k) for less than two years, you will not get a company match on your after-tax contributions in the year you make the withdrawal.

Your pretax contributions can only be withdrawn before age 59 ½ if you qualify for a hardship withdrawal. This occurs in cases of financial hardship, like funeral costs or medical expenses, and in cases of foreclosure or eviction.

Marriott 401(k) early withdrawal

If you are still a Marriott employee and have not reached 59 ½ years of age, you can withdraw your after-tax savings as long as they are not from the current year. However, you will lose the company match for the year you make this withdrawal. You can only withdraw pretax 401(k) contributions if you qualify under the ‘financial hardship’ rule. This applies to situations like rental evictions, mortgage foreclosure, educational expenses, funeral costs, and uninsured medical costs.
