Nordstrom is a fashion retailer that operates over 100 department stores across in United States and Canada. While best known for their women’s apparel, shoes, and accessories, they offer menswear too. First established as a shoe store in Seattle in 1901, they continue to thrive today and are still managed and partially owned by the Nordstrom family.

New Nordstrom employees are eligible to participate in the 401(k) plan immediately upon hire if they are at least age 18 or older. If you don’t enroll in the plan, you will be automatically enrolled within 30 days upon hire at a 3% contribution rate, which increases by 1% annually until it reaches 10%. To receive a company match, you must have completed 1,000 hours of service, and be employed on the last day of the plan year. The company matches contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 4% of eligible pay.

Nordstrom 401(k) provider

Nordstrom has changed 40(k) providers several times in recent years. As of 2023, Nordstrom 401(k) plan is administered by BNY Mellon, a New York-based investment bank, and Alight Solutions LLC offers recordkeeping for its 401(k) plan.

Eligible Nordstrom 401(k) participants can access and manage their retirement money via the Alight Solutions website. This website is also linked via the Nordstrom employee portal. If you are logging into your account for the first time, you will be required to answer a set of questions to verify your identity.

Nordstrom 401(k) login

If you’re eligible for the Nordstrom 401(k) plan, you can log in to your 401(k) account via the Alight Solutions website. You will be required to enter your username and password, but if you have forgotten either of these details, you can use the reset link to create a new username or password. You should also be able to access your Nordstrom 401(k) from the Nordstrom employee portal.

Nordstrom 401(k) match

Nordstrom matches 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 4% of eligible compensation. So, if you contribute 4% of your pay to the plan, you will receive the full company match.

Sometimes, depending on shareholder decisions and company performance, Nordstrom may offer an additional profit-based match of up to 50 cents per dollar on the first 4% of eligible pay. Long-term employees may be offered an additional 2% match, but this depends on their employment date and can change.

Nordstrom 401(k) loan

Nordstrom allows you to take up to 2 loans for any purpose from your Nordstrom 401(k), with specific criteria. You can take amounts from $1 up to 50% of your vested account balance after any other outstanding loan.

Loan terms are for 5 years maximum, or 20 years if it is specifically being used for the purchase of a principal residence. Your interest rate will be the prime rate plus 1% and is paid off via an automatic pay deduction.

Nordstrom 401(k) after termination

Once you leave employment with Nordstrom, you won’t be able to make further contributions to the plan. Depending on how much money you have in your 401(k) balance, you can keep the retirement money invested with Nordstrom, or it may be automatically cashed out or rolled over to an IRA. You can also opt to roll over the vested value of your plan to another equivalent plan, receive a lump-sum distribution, or keep your Nordstrom 401(k) as a separate plan.

Nordstrom 401(k) withdrawal

If you are still employed and actively contributing to your Nordstrom 401(k), you are entitled to a partial or full distribution at age 59 ½ even if you stay employed and working with them. Usually, you will not be able to withdraw from 401(k) until you reach age 59 ½ or leave the company. However, there is an exception for limited hardship withdrawals if you have an immediate financial need.

Nordstrom 401(k) early withdrawal

Nordstrom 401(k) plan discourages early withdrawals from your account under most circumstances. However, you may be eligible for a ‘hardship withdrawal’ if you can demonstrate that you have pressing circumstances that qualify. This includes uninsured home repair expenses, preventing eviction, some tuition expenses, and uninsured medical expenses.

A hardship withdrawal lets you access your rollover account, elective contributions, and profit-sharing contributions. Nordstrom employees older than 59 ½ can access either part of or all of their accounts even if they are still working and not officially retired.

Nordstrom 401(k) rollover form

You can access the Nordstrom 401(k) rollover form via your portal on the Alight Solutions website, the Nordstrom employee portal, or contact them via phone for assistance. Your HR team may also be able to assist you. You are eligible to roll over a part or full amount from any other retirement plan or traditional IRA, but cannot do so from a Roth IRA.

Employees can contribute up to 50% of eligible pay, up to the annual IRS limits. You can revoke this contribution rate change at any time. If you want to receive the company match, you must have worked at least 1,000 hours during the calendar year, and be employed as of the last day of the plan year.

All employee contributions, including catch-ups and rollover contributions, are always 100% vested. In any other circumstance, your Nordstrom 401(k) will be fully vested for employer contributions after 3 years. However, they offer partial vestment over those years. If you have been with the company for 1 year, you receive 33% vesting, 67% for 2 years, and three or more have the full 100%.
