Generally, you will be allowed to borrow the lesser of 50% of your vested 401(k) balance, up to a maximum of $50,000. You can take a general-purpose loan or a residential 401(k) loan depending on the purpose of the loan. Trinet 401k after termination
If you leave your job at Trinet, you have several options with your 401(k) money. You can leave the 401(k) plan with Trinet, but you need to have at least $5,000 in your balance. You can also choose to roll over to an IRA to maintain the tax advantages of the retirement savings.
If your new employer offers a 401(k) plan, you can choose to roll over your old 401(k) to consolidate your retirement savings under one account. Lastly, you can decide to withdraw the 401(k) money, but be aware that withdrawals before age 59 ½ will be subject to income taxes and penalties.

Trinet allows several types of 401(k) withdrawals. If you are age 59 ½ or older and actively employed, you will be allowed to take penalty-free withdrawals from the account. However, you will pay income taxes on the withdrawal at your tax bracket.
You will also be allowed to take in-service withdrawals while still employed; you can withdraw from your rollover funds or a Roth 401(k) account.
The plan also allows participants who are below age 59 ½ to take hardship withdrawals. To qualify for a hardship withdrawal, you must prove immediate and heavy financial need, and you must have exhausted all other options available, including in-service withdrawals.
Trinet 401k early withdrawal
You may be allowed to take an early 401(k) withdrawal from your Trinet 401(k) plan if you are facing an immediate and heavy financial need. Some of the qualifying hardships include the purchase of primary residence, repair of primary residence, non-reimbursed medical expenses, post-secondary education expenses, funeral expenses, etc. The hardship withdrawal may not exceed the amount needed to cover the hardship withdrawal and any arising taxes.
