What is the Social Security Administration?
The Social Security Administration is an independent federal government agency that manages the Social Security program covering retirement, disability, and survivor benefits. The agency was initially part of the Department of Health and Human Services, and it regained its independent status as an independent agency in 1994.
Some of the benefits that SSA administers include retirement benefits, disability income, survivor benefits, etc. It also administers the Supplemental Security Income and Medicare parts A and B. As of June 2022, there were 65 million Americans receiving different types of Social Security benefits.
How to contact Social Security
If you want help from Social Security, you can contact the federal government agency using the following ways:
Social Security website
You can contact Social Security online using the Social Security website. You can access online services by going to the Online Services page on the Social Security website. You can apply for benefits, track the status of your application, request a new or replacement Social Security card, or print a Social Security statement.
You can access services on the Social Security website Monday to Friday from 5.00 am to 1.00 am, Saturday from 5.00 am to 11.00 pm, and Sunday from 8.00 am to 11.30 pm. The website uses English and Spanish languages, but there are other languages available like Arabic, Chinese, Greek, French, Italian, Russian, etc.
Phone
You can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 at any time to get help with any issue you have. Social Security does not publish the phone numbers of the local Social Security offices, and you need to call the 800 number to speak to a representative. You can call SSA between 8.00 am to 7.00 pm Monday through Friday.
Some of the services you can get through the automated phone system include applying for a new or replacement Social Security card, printing a Social Security statement, requesting a Social Security award letter, or following up on Medicare benefits. You can also listen to the automated systems to get information on taxes, fraud prevention, and benefits payment dates.
In person
If you don’t get help on the Social Security website or over the phone, you can visit SSA’s field offices. There are more than 1200 field offices spread across the United States, and you can visit the local SSA office closest to you to get any of the Social Security services. Social Security offers a Social Security office locator that you can use to find the office closest to you. Simply type your zip code in the office locator, and the addresses of the local offices closest to you will pop up.
You should request an appointment with the local office ahead of the visit. Local social security offices are always busy, and you may have to wait for a long time to be served. Call the 800 toll-free number to request an appointment at the local office.
If you did not get help through the other channels of communication, you can write a letter to Social Security. SSA recommends writing a letter only if other methods of communication fail. Outside the United States
If you live outside the United States, and you want to access Social Security services, you can contact the local American embassy. US embassies around the world work with the Social Security Office of Earnings and International Operations to address Social Security issues. Social Security provides a list of US embassies that you can contact in each country. If your country does not have a US embassy, you can’t contact the US embassy in a neighboring country.
